Project Overview
A smart home brand needed a customized wall-mounted smart home control panel to provide centralized control for lighting, air conditioning, curtains, door locks, security devices, and other connected home appliances.
The customer was looking for an embedded mainboard solution with reliable Android support, wireless connectivity, voice interaction, OTA updates, and low-power operation for long-term wall-mounted use.
KICKPI developed a customized RK3566 smart home control panel mainboard integrating display, touch control, wireless communication, audio, smart home protocol expansion, and Android system customization.
Customer Requirements
The smart home control panel needed to support:
- HD touchscreen display
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
- Zigbee expansion for smart home devices
- Voice interaction and audio playback
- Customized Android OS and UI
- RS485 and relay control
- OTA remote firmware updates
- Low-power operation
- Compact wall-mounted design
RK3566 ODM Solution
Based on the project requirements, KICKPI selected the Rockchip RK3566 platform and designed a customized mainboard around the customer’s product architecture.
The solution integrated the display and touch interface with wireless communication modules, audio and voice functions, RS485/relay interfaces, and smart home protocol expansion.
The Android system was also customized to provide a user-friendly control interface and support OTA updates for future software maintenance.
System Architecture
Touch Display → RK3566 Mainboard → Android System → Smart Home Applications
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / Zigbee / RS485 / Relay → Smart Home Devices
This modular architecture allows the control panel to communicate with different types of smart home devices while providing a unified user interface.
Key ODM Development Challenges
1. Multi-Protocol Smart Home Integration
Smart home products often involve different communication technologies and device protocols. Lighting, curtains, HVAC systems, security devices, and door locks may require different interfaces.
KICKPI adopted a modular communication architecture supporting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, RS485, and relay expansion, making it easier to integrate different smart home devices and extend the platform in future product generations.
2. Thermal Management for Wall-Mounted Devices
Unlike conventional consumer electronics, wall-mounted control panels have limited internal space and restricted airflow.
To improve long-term reliability, KICKPI optimized the PCB layout, power management, and system power consumption, followed by thermal and temperature-rise testing.
The optimized design provides stable operation while meeting the requirements of a compact wall-mounted smart home terminal.
Project Results
The customized RK3566 mainboard successfully achieved:
- Customized Android system and UI adaptation
- HD touchscreen support
- Multi-protocol smart home connectivity
- Voice interaction and audio playback
- RS485 and relay expansion
- OTA remote update capability
- Low-power and stable operation
- Compact wall-mounted product integration
The mainboard was successfully integrated into the customer’s smart home product line, providing a scalable hardware platform for future smart home applications.
